第7回：核心を伝える" it "

さして重要視されていない” it”ですが、実は”重要”です。もし、itは”それ”という意味だけと捉えているなら、 それ(その考え)は捨てたほうがいい。

感情が先走っているときや、物事の核心を、素早く伝えたいときなどにitは使われます。"it"は核心を指し示したり、核心そのものを自身で表現したりします。

今回は、itが活きている表現を小説『赤毛のアン』から紹介しましょう。

本当は男の子を養子にとりたかったカスバート家のマシューとマリラでしたが、ちょっとした手違いで女の子のアンが、やって来ました。最初は孤児院に送り返そうとしたのですが、 色々なことがあって、結果、アンを養女として育てていくことにしました。後年、体調が芳しくないマシュー・カスバートに、 アンは言います。「私が男の子だったら今頃、たくさんマシューの手伝いができて、もっと楽をさせてあげる事ができたのに」 それに対してマシューは、こう応えます。

"Well now, I'd rather have you than a dozen boys, Anne," said Matthew patting her hand. " Just remember that ― rather than a dozen boys. Well now, I guess it wasn't a boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it? it was a girl ― my girl ― my girl that I'm proud of."

「そうじゃなァ…、アン、ワシはお前のほうがいいよ、1ダースの男の子よりも」マシューはアンの手を軽く叩きました。 「いいかい、 1ダースの男の子よりも、じゃよ。つまり、そのう…、エイブリー奨学金をもらったのは男の子なんかじゃない ― じゃろう？　 女の子 ― ワシの娘が ― みんなに誇れるワシの娘が、もらったんじゃから」

it was a girl.　itが活きています。万感の思いを"it"に託し、たたみかけるように、そのitは何なのかを説明していきます。それは、my girl さらに、 my girl that I'm proud ofと感情をひとつひとつ確認しながら拡張表現しています。普段は拙く言葉を吐いていくマシューなのですが、 この場面では、とても良いリズム感を伴った表現になっています。

今回はさして難しい単語は無いので、早速スラッシュ・リーディングをしていきましょう。

【 rather than 】

重要表現はrather than あたりでしょうか。

rather自体は「いくぶん」、とか「やや」といった意味の副詞で、

I'd rather not talk about it
あまりその話はしたくないかも…。

と言った感じで使用しますが、有名なのは would rather A than B のような仮定法や、 rather than C という表現。would rather A than B は、学校では「Bというより、むしろA」といった具合に教えられますが、 thanは比較の接続詞もしくは前置詞なので、それなりに比較しているように訳し上げればOkです。

I would rather go to the film than to the play. 　　※１
映画に行きたいかな/芝居に行くのではなく（芝居より映画に行きたい）

We would rather rent the house than buy it outright. 　　※１
家を借りるほうがいいかな/即金で買うのではなく（買うより借家のほうが良い）

rather than は、COBUILD辞典では下記のように使うと説明しています。

You use rather than when you are contrasting two things or situations. Rather than introduces the thing or situation that is not true or that you do not want.

I decided to write rather than phone.
電話ではなく書くことにした。

The problem was psychological rather than physiological...
問題は精神的なものだった/肉体的なことではなく。

When I'm going out in the evening I use the bike if I can rather than the car.
夜、外出するときは、可能なら自転車を使います/車ではなく。

ratherばかりを長くやっていると、今回のお題”it”に移れませんので、この辺にしておきましょう。

【 itについて 】

さて、itについて、です。冒頭に紹介したマシューの台詞の次の箇所にitが使われています。
①　 I guess it wasn't a boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it?
②　it was a girl ― my girl ― my girl that I'm proud of.
です。

学校では「天気・時間・日付・温度・・・を言い表すときはitで言うのだ」とか「直接目的語・間接目的語・前置詞の目的語・・・云々のit」 と機械的な説明がされるだけで、こういった内容をすべて覚えよ！みたいに教わります （教えている方が全てこれらのことをスラスラ言えるのか！と問いたくなる）。 実際、辞書を調べてみても本当に長い解説がされていてゲンナリします。

The free dictionary.comから少し用例を挙げますと、
polished the table until it shone
couldn't find out who it was
opened the meeting by calling it to order.
It is snowing.
Is it certain that they will win?
It was on Friday that all the snow fell.
She couldn't stand it.
This is it the rivals are finally face to face. That's it! I won't tolerate any more foolishness.
He thinks he's it. That steak was really it!

本当に色々なことを言い表すことができそうです、否、できるのです。が、 辞書にあるような解説内容を一つ一つ理解していないとitは使いこなせないのでしょうか？　

実は答えは、否、です。itのニュアンスをつかめば、大抵の使い分けができます。 それがタイトルにもある「核心を伝える" it "」なのです（Ta-dah!）。

心に留めておくことは次の文です。
itが文頭に来ると、次に核心的な語（最も言いたいこと）がくる。続いてその核心を説明する節・句などが来る。

It's so easy to fall in love.

to fall in love を指すitなどと考えるのではなく、話し手の最も言いたいことは”It's so easy”「すごく簡単なことだ」で、 それは何かというと「恋することは」と不定詞を使って説明しているのです。「簡単な事さ、恋に落ちるのは！」

これを文法的に「このitは、to fall in loveを指すものだから、それをitに置き換えてto fall in loveすることは、とても簡単なんだな」 などとやっていると返り読みになってしまい読書スピードが落ちるだけでなく、英語のニュアンスそのものがつかめなくなります。

学校もしくは文法書などでは、本来、主語となるto fall in loveの部分（主部）が長いので、それをitで受け、 仮主語としto以下を後部にもってきて云々…、なんてことが書かれているのですが、実はそうではなく、 大切なこと・言いたいこと・重要なこと…といった核心部分を先に言っているだけで、それこそが英語的発想なのです。

主部が長ったらしいので、それを後置するというのがまかり通るなら、次のような文は駄文となるはずです。

On the ability of individuals to learn to live in harmony with others depends the future of mankind and the world. ※３

itから少し離れますが、上記の文は、実は駄文などではなく（美文だとも思いませんが）、いわゆる倒置という表現手法です。 「個々が他と調和して生きることを学ぶ能力にこそ、人類と世界の将来はかかっている」といった意味。 この文も重要なことを先に述べていますね。文法的には The future (of mankind and the world) depends on the ability (of individuals to learn to live in harmony with others).という形です。ですが、そんなことにとらわれるのではなく、 大切なこと（最も言いたいこと）は「個々が他と調和して生きることを学ぶ能力」なので、それを文頭に持ってきて 「それこそが人類と世界の将来にかかっている」んだよ、と説明しているわけです。

日本語でも「お前か、それを盗んだのは！？」なんて言い方を、よくしますよね。それと同じです。切符の自動販売機を「券売機」というのも倒置強調です (どこかの予備校の先生が書いた漢文入門の本に「券売機」というのは間違いで動詞+目的語で「売券機」が正しい、などと曰（のたま）わっていらっしゃいましたが、 リンゴでもジュースでもなく、この機械が販売しているのは切符（券）ですよ、と強調したいがために起こる倒置で「券売機」は「券売機」です)。

スラッシュ・リーディングする際は、いきなり冒頭にOn+前置詞が来ているので「あれ、変だな？　これは後でOnにつながる語がくるかも…」 と予測し頭の片隅にそれを保持しておきながら読み進めます。
Onは何かに密着しているイメージなので、

On the ability	/	（何かが）能力に密着している
of individuals	/	個々の（能力に）
to learn to live	/	生きることを学ぶ（個々の能力に密着している）
depends the future	/	未来は依存している（on the abilityに） => 倒置なのでV+Sかァ。ここで謎が解ける。
of mankind and the world.	/	人類と世界の未来は（能力にかかっている）

といった感じです。

閑話休題。 itに話を戻しましょう。

It's hot.
It's cold.
It is snowing.

暑い、寒い、雪が降っている、ってことを先にいいたいわけです。

It's important to build your confidence.
大事な事だ（何が→）自身を築きあげる事は
大事なことは、己を成長させることなんだ

It's hard to pinpoint what happened.
難しい（何が→）何が起こったのかを特定することは
大変んんだよなァ、何が起こったのかを特定するのは。

確かなのか？ /（何が→that以下のこと） 彼らが勝つのは

It's A for B to C　は「BがCするのはAだ」といった意味になる型です。これもよく使われるい言い方です。

また、【アニメ】『けいおん！』英語吹き替え版の１２話では、主人公の女の子・平沢 唯がライブの日にギターを忘れ、家に取りに帰って学校へと戻る途中、 過去の自分に次のように語りかけるシーンが印象的でした。

それと、核心を伝えるitは、 その核心の代用として使うこともできます。 誰かに説明を受けていて、その内容が理解できたときに " I got it (わかりました)" というのは、 相手の言っている内容（核心部分=it）を掴めた、ということです。

いかがです？なんとなくitの心みたいなものが掴めたのではないでしょうか？
itのニュアンスを感じながらもう一度、 マシューの言葉を読んでみましょう。
