WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the most devastating attack on American soil in modern times and the most hunted man in the world, was killed in a firefight with United States forces in Pakistan, President Obama announced on Sunday night.

少しづつ見ていきましょう。一文一文が非常に長いです。まず最初の文の主語ですが、 ここが非常に長く Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the most devastating attack on American soil in modern times and the most hunted man in the world, までが主語ですがOsama bin Ladenの後の部分は彼がどういった人物なのかという説明箇所なので、 実質的には　Osama bin Laden　が主語です。

（例）Rogmic, the greatest manager in our company, has a cold.

会社の中で最も偉大なマネージャーのログミックさんが、カゼを引いています
といった具合に【　S, ◇◇◇, +V　】と主語（名詞）の後ろに説明するものを置くと、 それを修飾します。

です。つまり　Osama bin Laden was killed　ということです。 その後に前置詞が文を修飾していきます。つまりその「殺された」 という出来事を詳しく説明していくわけです。

最後に「誰が言ったのか」を付け加えます。

S+Vの関係を見ますと Mr. Obama declared　+　he disclosed　となっています。 こちらの文にも後半部分に先に説明した『名詞の後ろに説明するものを置く』用法が用いられています。

というところです。「アルカイダのリーダであるビン・ラディン」
そして関係代名詞　who　でビン・ラディンが何をしてきたのか説明しています。
had eluded　巧みにずっと逃げてきた
完了形表現が時間の長さを感じさせます。捕まるまでず〜っと逃げてきたといったニュアンスです。
ゲーム、 メタルギアソリッドに「エルード」という小技が出てきますが、 これがeludeのことです。建物や橋にぶら下がって移動して敵の発見をかわす（巧みに逃げる）ことです。 ゲームをやったことがある人は、このシーンをイメージしておくと記憶に残りやすいです (発音が異なりますので注意)。

となっていますので、今回は「黒幕」という日本語をあててみました。
イメージ的にはプロジェクトなどの中心人物なので、立案者， 指導者などをあてている英和辞典もあります。

あまり関係ないのですが、ナポレオン・ヒルの『成功哲学』などにも、 このマスターマインドという言葉は登場します。 ですが、こちらは彼の哲学用語でして「二人以上の、統一した願望や目標を持った人間の集まりのことであり、 また、それらの人々の間で行き交う、波長の合った思考のバイブレーションのこと」 と定義しています。少しオカルトチックですが、要は 「みんなで仲良く会議せよ。さすれば不可思議なる思考の波が生まれるぞよ」ということでしょうか？

devastatingはdevastate(v)の形容詞です。まず動詞のdevastateに目をやると、
If something devastates an area or a place, it damages it very badly or destroys it totally.

要は徹底的に破壊することをdevastateといいます。 それの形容詞なので「破壊的な、壊滅的な」といった意味になります。

FaceBookに次のような文章がありました。

ファンだったのでしょうね。ショックの度合いが伝わってきます。

British soil: TERRITORY, land, domain, dominion, region, country.
つまり「土地」とか「領地・領域」です

soil、American soil…ロシアの地、アメリカの地
attack on American soilでアメリカの地に対してペタッと攻撃する（こと）。
on American soil の前置詞onはペタッとくっついてというニュアンスです。

といった具合に「〜を攻撃する」はattack on 〜という形になることが多いです。

モダンタイムズといえば、思い出すのは、チャールズ・チャップリン(Charles Chaplin)が1936年に撮った映画。 当時の世の中をを機械に、人間を歯車の一部に喩え、皮肉った映画です。 70年以上も昔の作品なのに今の世でも充分共感できる部分があります。この資本主義社会に対する皮肉は、 映画『 独裁者 』（1940年）では、すべての人々にたいして 「今の世の中、みんな何か間違っているんじゃない？」というメッセージに変わります。 最後の演説 で、ヒトラーのような独裁者 Hynkel役のチャップリンは次ように語ります。

We think too much and feel too little,
more than machinery we need humanity,
more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness,
without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

私たちは考えるばかりで、感じようとしない。
機械のように人と接するのではなく、私たちには人の情が必要なのです。

細かいツッコミをいれると、私が学生の頃ギデオン教会から頂いた新約聖書には17章21節には the kingdom of God is within you となっています。

「〜との銃撃戦で（死んだ）」というときは　"in a firefight with 〜"　となることに注意しましょう

あと、よくややこしくなるのが曜日を表す前置詞"on"です。特定の日を表す時も"on"が使われます。 Sunday nightと特定の日なので、"on"です。
