第2回目の英語のお勉強教室は被害の拡大が収まらないこの話題。

Christopher Miller’s PlayStation Portable game console had been broken for most of two years. So when his parents got him a new one for his 25th birthday on April 18, he was elated — but only briefly.
Last week, Sony’s online network for the PlayStation suffered a catastrophic failure through a hacking attack. 先週、プレイステーション・オンラインは、ハッキング攻撃を受け、壊滅的な損害を被った。 そして、ミラーのようなサービスアカウントをもつゲーマー達7,700万人が、 インターネットを通してのゲームをできなくなったり、新作ゲームのデモ・プレイができなくなった。


かわいそうなミラー君。同情します。ですが、ボクのプレステ３なんてハッキング攻撃以前に、 3回も故障したんだゾ （詳しくは、メインページ　2011/02/04　『PS3大破！　これで3度目 orz』を参照ください）。

まあ、グチはこの辺にしておきましょうか。

今回はたくさん単語を勉強するのではなく文法（完了形）について少し見ていきましょう。
便宜上、未来完了の説明は除きます。
過去からある時点までの継続状態が完了すれば、完了形です。なんだか煙にまいたような説明です。
具体的に見ていきましょう。上の文では、

Christopher Miller’s PlayStation Portable game console had been broken for most of two years.

が、それにあたります。 

過去-----------------→どこかの時点--------------→現在-----→
                           ↑
    ←-----2年間-----→この時点まで壊れていた

    ←for two years--→had been broken

つまりクリストファーくんのPSPは過去からどこかの時点まで、2年間継続して、壊れていたわけです。
時々治ったりしたわけではありません。ず〜っと壊れていたのです。
なので　had benn broken と過去完了という形で表現しています。
第1回の”Bin Laden Is Dead, Obama Says”の記事では、
Justice has been done.
とオバマ大統領が語ったのは、いままでアメリカはず〜っとビン・ラディンを追いかけていて、 ついに目的がなされた、という気持ちが　has benn done　となったのです。

過去-----------------------------→現在-----→
                                    ↑
    →ビン・ラディンを追っていた→　ここで殺害という目的が達成された

                                  has been done

Justice has been done.

同じ感覚で「宿題やっと終わったよ」というときも、 

過去-----------------------------→現在-----→
                                    ↑
    -→ず〜っと必死にやってきた-→　ここでやっとできた。

                                  have finished

I've finished my homework.

本文にはもうひとつ完了表現があります（一部省略）。
Mr. Miller have been unable to play games. 

過去-----------------→どこかの時点--------------→現在-----→
                           ↑                      ↑
　　　　　　　　　　ゲームができなくなった-----→今もできない--→

Mr. Miller have been unable to play games.

未来完了も同じような考え方です。「未来のどこかの時点で完了しているはずだ」というときに　 will have done　と言い表します。長くなりそうなので、説明は他の機会に譲りますが、 『メタルギア ソリッド３』の英語版からボクの好きなセリフをあげておきましょう。

suffer from になると　from以下を経験することによって「苦しむ」といった意味になります。 


suffering from severe depression.      深刻な欝に苦しむ
suffered from a debilitating illness.  衰弱性の病気に苦しむ
suffer from the lack of fresh oxygen.  新鮮な酸素不足に苦しむ
suffer from allergies caused by pets.  ペットに起因するアレルギーに苦しむ

failureは「失敗」とかいった意味でよく知られています。 ended in failure 「失敗に終わった」で決まり文句なのでそのまま覚えましょう。

His effort ended in failure.
80% of the emotional relationships ended in failure!

ですが、機械や体の一部に対して使うと「故障」、「損傷」といった意味になります。 本文では a catastrophic failure（壊滅的損傷） が、この使い方です。 COBUILDで解りやすい説明がなされています。
If there is a failure of something, for example a machine or part of the body, it goes wrong and stops working or developing properly.
機械や体にfailureがあると、変な方向に動いたり、働きや進展が止まったりする状態になってしまうため、 「故障」、「損傷」といった言葉が当てられます。

There were also several accidents mainly caused by engine failures on take-off...
He was being treated for kidney failure...
